Since my old comment about ADV was gone cause my main account was terminated , I'll comment it again Only people like Steven Foster and Chris Ayres made butchered dubs at both ADV and Sentai The others luke John Swasey,Don Rush,Kyle Jones,David Williams and Matt Greenfield not only gave a shit about the voice directing but also made the most effort in keeping an accurately translated script in their dubs

I think I might be the last person to “grow up” with this show; my dad watched it as a teen when it aired, and taped it as it ran. He also saved several toys; a Scott Bernard with a Cyclone and an Invid Shocktrooper. He gave me those tapes and toys when I was a kid in the late 90’s/early 00’s. Peak parenting

I usually have a short attention span but this kept me engaged throughout! if I have one comment, I feel that there was at least an attempt of a slow shift towards darker themes. the Cecelia arc was the first foray, and it would lead to even more personal losses later down the line it's not quite a hard turn of immediately dark, there was an attempt to slowly get into it, but then they just step on the gas after that

You should check also the new manga by satoshi shiki, it's more similar to the old version but it tries to do also different things with the characters which i think is pretty cool, also the drawings are fire and the character designs are the best mix between the original ones and the new anime ones. I am not on par because i want to read the whole thing when it ends but so far it has the potential to be almost as good as the 2019 anime although there is still the old version of hyakkimaru

Having finished watching all pre-Unicorn UC stuff, ZZ is nowhere near as bad as people say BUT it is still a heavily flawed show even if you ignore the first 20 episodes. its quality is all over the place and its comedic moments don't always land but the good moments can be genuinely great, specially the episodes once they arrive on Earth. That being said, I think this new narrative that ZZ was always good is kinda overselling it a bit too much (no way 8th MS Team is bad compared to ZZ) specially with stuff like how the ZZ has a kinda unsatisfying last batch of episodes and how Haman goes from a genuinely threatening force to just a crazy woman with a broken heart.

MGS -> Zeta to ZZ is like a completely different program and worse part is its your only continuity bridge between that and Chars Counter Attack. where did you get those numbers for Dragon Ball? because they're massively incorrect. Took two seconds of research to check Kanzenshuu and see that Dragon Ball averaged at least 21% for its runtime with the lowest it ever scored being 13%. Also would like to see your source on 9% being considered high when it definitely is not. GTO (made by the same company) ended a month before Ghost Stories ever aired and had far better ratings than even Dragon Ball at 28.5% which is very easily verified with a quick google search like everything else so far. Pierrot is infamous in the anime community for taking short cuts and as a result is well known for not only ripping entire fight sequences but poorly adapting source material as a whole. So from the start you've really misrepresented the situation. I'm aware that people enjoyed the sub in other countries, but it was never a sucess in Japan and the data is right there proving it. Huge amount of conjecture in a video supposedly getting to the truth, mostly seems like you've got an issue with Foster and perhaps rightly so but your argument is flawed from the start because you've misunderstood how Japanese rating systems work.

I figured those three characters reminded me of Team Rocket from Pokémon. They’re all goofy, hilarious and quirky. They always screw up but never give up. And even though they’re the bad guys, they’re so likable.

This inspired Yugioh yeah, but also looked into Mattoru ga Kuru! (“Mattoru WILL Come Back!”) which was a manga by the author of Doraemon in the 70’s about a very bullied shy boy who gained the powers of darkness, and would get revenge on his bullies using the same ways they tortured him. It’s a dark manga that goes into the human psyche. Kazuki Takahashi himself said that this work was heavily influential to Yugioh and it was noticed by many Japanese readers way back in the day.

Zz would have been OK if it was made a stand alone that had nothing to do with 0079 and Zeta. Which was serious and dark. Settings and continuation alignment matters. Just like Transformers Prime was great then it turned into RID which turned into Rescue Bots..like WTF. Prime: Older Kids RiD : Kids Rescue Bots: Toddlers Gundam demographics Gundam : competing with Macross and Super Robots at the time Zeta: Best Mecha, but was dark and convoluted ZZ: Comedic and almost like a mockery of the first two.

There's an essential bit of pacing I think gets... overlooked, or not given the credit it deserves from how often its missed. You need to give the audience a break to breathe. Constantly driving the emotions and stakes up and up sounds like a fun idea, but in practice the viewer will become so upset they'll unplug. That's why you have the term "Comic *Relief*", it's a relief from the pressure of tension. The gag characters and cutaways exist to briefly and slightly bring the tension back down so the overall tension can keep increasing. Like a rest stop when climbing a mountain. But even this analogy is very abstract. The execution needs to suit the story elements, but characters, themes, pacing, and narrative are not cookie-cutter pieces you can make into a reliable formula. That's what makes writing and filmmaking a place where mastery of art so distinct from cheap or sloppy work. Mobile Suit Gundam had its comic relief in characters like Kai and the kids, but you never really had much of that in Z or back-half ZZ. The few jokes that did exist were pretty mean-spirited and aimed at a central character's expense, like the wierd joke about Kamile being 'feminine' or Marshmallow Dude's over the top chivalry being mocked after his self-sacrifice. When you look at the Gundam shows in chronological release order, you can see how different teams tweak the levels of tension and comedy to hit the level they want while still keeping the audience. As an example, I think it's why Origin really plays up Dozle's ogre-archetype traits as a diegetic gag. You can briefly dial the emotions down from watching a bunch of people die screaming against long odds if you have the guy watching it rip up a metal guard rail with his bare hands while he cartoonishly bawls about the heroic sacrifices of his subordinates.
